Aakash Chopra Questions India's Decision to Delay Ravichandran Ashwin's Bowling in 2nd Test
In the second Test match between India and New Zealand, Ravichandran Ashwin's late introduction as the fifth bowler raised eyebrows, especially given his status as the leading wicket-taker among active cricketers. Despite India's modest second innings total, many expected Ashwin to be a key figure in the bowling attack, especially with left-handers in New Zealand's lineup.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra expressed his confusion, stating that Ashwin's delayed involvement was baffling. He pointed out that Ashwin's track record speaks for itself, and not using him effectively in such a critical situation left many questions unanswered.
Chopra elaborated further, noting that while Jasprit Bumrah's extended spell was understandable given his two wickets, the decision to persist with Siraj over Ashwin, or even Ravindra Jadeja, in crucial moments felt like a missed opportunity. He suggested that Ashwin should have been brought in much earlier to take advantage of the conditions and break the partnership.
The frustration culminated when Ashwin was finally called to bowl with only 15 or 20 runs left in the game, leaving Chopra and many fans questioning the tactics. He even emphasized that this decision should have been addressed in the post-match press conference, as Ashwin's exclusion until the game was nearly over was hard to justify
